Dorothy M. Stepteau was a pillar of the Baton Rouge community; Stepteau left a legacy of service, dedication, and commitment to students, the Baton Rouge Chapter NAASC, and the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College. She was affiliated with numerous boards, organizations, and clubs.
This scholarship is dedicated in the memory of our beloved sister.
Each year at our Christmas Social, we celebrate and support our students by awarding Book Scholarships to those from our service area — stretching from Baton Rouge to North Louisiana. The scholarship amount varies each year based on the funds we raise and the number of students who join us. Students must be present at the event to receive their award, so we hope you’ll come, connect, and let us celebrate you!
Each year, our chapter awards the Dorothy Stepteau Memorial Scholarship for academic excellence, service, and leadership, along with Book Scholarships to help students purchase essential textbooks. We support Spelman students from Baton Rouge through North Louisiana—and your generosity makes it possible.
This prestigious MERIT BASED scholarship bears the name of a 1963 Spelman graduate who was a true renaissance woman, educator, entrepreneur, community and political activist, novelist, poet, socially galvanizing life member of both the National Panhellenic Council and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, a woman of faith, a dedicated mother and grandmother, and a consistent mentor to aspiring and academically motivated young high school women since the mid 1960's, and a 2022 posthumous recipient of the Baton Rouge Alumnae Chapter's Women of Excellence Award.
Students qualifying for this scholarship must be current Spelman College students embarking on their second year at Spelman and above. Students may receive this scholarship one time.
